Yannick Jadot: “I want to bring the school into the 21st century”

La Croix: You propose to organize, on the school, a “consensus conference” in the form of a national consultation, with all the stakeholders. Is a consensus really possible in school matters?

Yannick Jadot : It’s not about getting everyone to agree on everything! But to bet on collective intelligence and put education and emancipation through knowledge back at the heart of the republican pact. We have seen, in recent years, how badly schools have been treated, with teachers’ purchasing power often declining, working conditions which have deteriorated, overcrowded classes and too many children in a situation of failure or psychological distress. Also, this meeting – which will be accompanied by job creation and salary increases – should make it possible to repair the institution. It will give staff and parents the opportunity to calmly discuss the teaching methods and new skills to be deployed… The consensus conference will also make it possible to rethink school time.

→ THE FACTS. Presidential 2022: Yannick Jadot’s program “to live better”

With what objective?

YJ : It is necessary to better articulate and balance basic knowledge during the day (reading, writing, counting) and devote more time to practical knowledge, nature, culture, sports, manual work. This means looking also at the contours of the year. I do not rule out reducing the length of holidays, especially that of summer holidays, and therefore reviewing the service obligations of teachers. All the countries that achieve better school results than us have fewer school holidays. But it will be up to this consensus conference and collective negotiations to define the terms.

You give precedence to the development of the child over excellence and academic knowledge, some will reproach you. How do you answer them?

YJ : It is not a question of reducing the share of fundamental knowledge but of better distributing it over a longer school year. For the rest, I intend to reintroduce maths – and to introduce life and earth sciences – as subjects in their own right in the common core in first and last year. It is imperative to counter the effects of the school reform, which has resulted in a decline in scientific vocations, especially among girls.

What is terrible in the French system is a form of denial. We lock ourselves into ineffective, even counterproductive logics, turned towards the past, sometimes even towards the IIIand Republic. Although I had parents who were educated, respected and recognized in our village, I don’t dream of going back to the school of the 1960s and 1970s. On the contrary, we must bring schools into the 21st century.and century and the 21stand century in the school.

→ ANALYSIS. Education: concrete ideas to build your orientation

In particular by changing evaluation practices?

YJ : Yes, it is necessary to leave the permanent notation. By favoring competition over cooperation, we exert such pressure on the students that they have the impression of playing their academic success on each note, of passing the great oral examination of Sciences Po each time they speak. The acquisition of knowledge and learning is sanctioned rather than valued… High school, for its part, has become a machine for pre-selecting young people who, most often, do not yet know what they want to do. do in life. We would really benefit from building bridges between general, techno and pro routes.

→ ANALYSIS. The disappointing assessment of the duplication of classes in working-class neighborhoods

You intend to recruit 65,000 more teachers. With what objective?
YJ : These recruitments must in particular make it possible to reduce the number of students everywhere who have become unmanageable, to facilitate replacements, to free up time to carry out interdisciplinary projects, etc.

You also promise 20% salary increases to teachers, especially at the beginning and mid-career. How do you finance this support for education?

YJ : These measures in favor of the school, and more generally the recruitment of 200,000 additional civil servants, will be financed thanks to the restoration of a real solidarity tax on wealth which will affect more strongly and proportionally the 1% of French people richer, but also thanks to an increase in inheritance tax on the greatest fortunes, to the fight against tax loopholes and tax evasion. So many additional recipes that will restore the Republican promise.

→ MAINTENANCE. Valérie Pécresse: “Making France love again is a major subject for the school”

You want to involve the private sector under contract more in the effort of diversity. How?

YJ : I want to introduce a bonus-malus: more means for the private establishments which play the game, less means for those which do not play it. Since these establishments benefit from public funds, I do not see why they would free themselves from a collective responsibility consisting in fighting against social inequalities and house arrest.

What place for the teaching of religion in school?

YJ : We must strengthen education on the history of religions, education on the messages conveyed by religions. Today, children are exposed to them on social networks, in their families, and we must allow them to analyze them in a distanced, critical, scientific way. We can find a peaceful way to approach these topics at school.

You want to put an end to Parcoursup, which crystallizes a lot of worries and anxieties. How to replace this platform?

YJ : I obviously don’t want to go back to a system in which you queue for hours to submit your application to the university. No more than the draw that may have existed before Parcoursup. But we have to get out of this black box logic, a largely opaque system that leaves tens of thousands of students on the sidelines and benefits those who have digital agility and good relationships. The new device, named differently, will continue to rely on algorithms but with more transparency, a hierarchy of wishes by the candidates. Each of them must obtain a positive answer on at least one of their choices. This also means that we are creating, at university, 80,000 to 100,000 additional places to better meet demand.
