World No Tobacco Day: Know what is its history and importance

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on 31 May every year around the world. It was created in 1987 by WHO member states to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the death and disease it causes. Due to this, the World Health Organization has told that due to the Kovid 19 epidemic, millions of tobacco users have expressed their desire to quit smoking. Around 60 percent of tobacco users worldwide want to quit smoking. At the same time, this time WHO has started a global campaign with the slogan ‘Commit to Quit’ to celebrate World No Tobacco Day. Its objective is to wean 100 million people from tobacco use through digital tools. Also, this campaign can help create a healthy situation promoting tobacco cessation. On the other hand, smokers are more likely to suffer from heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic lung disease and diabetes and smoking also weakens the immune system, which increases the risk of Kovid 19 manifold.

World No Tobacco Day was observed on 31 May 1987. Due to which the World Health Assembly passed a resolution named WHA40.38 for World No Smoking Day on 7 April 1988. In which every year 31 May was called to celebrate World No Tobacco Day. The aim of this annual festival is to raise awareness among global citizens about the dangers of tobacco use.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2021 is to quit using tobacco. Under this theme, WHO aims to support stronger tobacco cessation policies and improve access, as well as support those who want to quit tobacco through the Quit and Win initiative. WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adnom Ghebreyes said that smokers are at a higher risk of serious illness and death by 50% than Kovid 19, so quitting smoking is the best thing to do.
