Ho Chi Minh CityThe 33-year-old woman, who had breast augmentation surgery at 1A Hospital on the afternoon of March 18, died of unknown cause on the afternoon of the same day. The police are investigating the case.
On the morning of March 19, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huynh Mai, Chief of Office of the Department of Health, said that the Department had grasped the incident. The Department Inspector is working with 1A Hospital (Tan Binh District) to ask for an explanation. Because the Tan Binh District Police are investigating, the Department of Health has not been able to access specific information.
Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, 34 years old, the patient’s sister, said that her sister booked a breast augmentation surgery with a doctor working at another place, not 1A Hospital. On March 18, she was scheduled to go to Hospital 1A for this doctor to perform surgery. Ms. Tram said she transferred 40 million VND to the doctor’s expenses.
At 11:30 on the same day, after completing the procedures and tests, she was taken to the operating room. Relatives (accompanied) wait outside. At about 3pm, she was not taken outside the operating room as expected, the family asked the doctor and was told to wait. An hour later, Ms. Tram received a call from the surgeon saying “urgently go to the hospital because her sister is in a serious condition”.
“When I got to the place they didn’t let me in, told me to wait. The medical staff said that the surgery was done, but my brother suddenly had difficulty breathing, dropped blood pressure, is still being actively resuscitated. I ask for him to be transferred. emergency hospital but was not approved”, Ms. Tram said.
At 18:30, suspecting that her sister was not healthy, she fiercely demanded to meet. “My brother’s body was cold at that time, his lips were pale, his hands and feet, his mouth was on a breathing tube… I thought he was dead, so I reported to Binh Tan District Police to come to work”, Ms. Tram said.
According to family members, the patient had a history of asthma, contracted Covid-19 and recovered in November 2021. About three weeks before the surgery, she had to pass protein and water because she was tired and could not eat. Before breast augmentation surgery, she reported her condition to the doctor.
“Please ask the hospital to provide a medical record, to clarify the cause of my sister’s death, and who is responsible for this,” Ms. Tram said.
VnExpress contacted the hospital management several times but have not received a response. Authorities are conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
