When is a fast heart rate dangerous? – VnExpress

Tachycardia is an irregular heart rhythm, which may not be dangerous, but can also be a warning sign of many cardiovascular diseases.

I am 56 years old, have coronary artery occlusion, have 2 stents placed. Recently, my heart beat fast, sometimes up to 136 beats / minute, or nervous, tired a lot, walking for a while, I have to stop breathing. I don’t know if this is a sign of heart failure? Is heart failure curable, doctor? (Nan Hanh)

Answer:

Coronary heart disease often requires long-term treatment, disease progression can be good or bad depending on the level of treatment adherence. If during the treatment process is not closely monitored, complications will be more likely. There are people with very good treatment but the disease progression is also unpredictable, the doctor will try to prolong the best heart condition, for the longest time. During treatment, if the patient develops a tachycardia of 130-140 beats/minute, it is abnormal. The heart rate of a normal person will fluctuate at rest 60 to less than 100 times / minute.

This arrhythmia may be due to heart failure or another newly added cause. For example, a patient has had coronary artery disease in the past, but then has a paroxysmal tachycardia or atrial fibrillation attack in old age (the older the person, the more frequent the episodes of atrial fibrillation). At this point, arrhythmias are an additional cause, unrelated to coronary heart disease. However, if the patient is treated for heart failure but has not fully resolved the coronary heart disease, it leads to progressive myocardial ischemia. Since then, the heart expands, heart function gradually decreases over time, this arrhythmia is partly related to heart failure.

Therefore, in order to make an accurate diagnosis, the patient needs to be re-examined, first of all, to consider whether the previous treatment of heart failure has progressed well or not. Second, it is necessary to review the nature of the mechanism of cardiac arrhythmia. If only 130-140 tachycardia is present, this tachyarrhythmia is dangerous or not requires electrocardiogram, monitoring Holter, usually mainly supraventricular tachyarrhythmias and ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

If the tachycardia muscle feels tired is another matter, in addition to the tachycardia muscle, the patient also feels tired, indicating that the heart is not as good as before. Arrhythmia is a warning sign that patients need to be examined, evaluated for heart and arrhythmia status to have a plan to adjust medication and find the cause of more intensive treatment.
