War in Ukraine: Sean Penn says he is ready to take up arms

The realization of his documentary in the country, started in the first days of the Russian invasion, made the actor want to fully engage in the conflict.

Since returning from Ukraine in March, where he made his documentary close to the conflict, Sean Penn has been thinking only of returning to the country, this time to fight the enemy. In a long interview with Hollywood Authentic the actor reflected on his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as his journey in Ukraine devastated by war, which he left on foot before reaching the Polish border. “If you have been in Ukraine, you must have thought of fightinghe confides. The other day I was at a gas station in Brentwood [un quartier de Los Angeles, NDLR] and I was thinking of taking up arms to fight Russia”.

If he goes to the front, Sean Penn assures him, he would fight “probably without bulletproof vest”. Because as “that strangerhe advances, it’s better to give it to one of the civilians who have become soldiers and don’t have one, or to a fighter who has more fighting skills than me, to a younger man or woman who might beat longer“.

Although he continues to work on his documentary, the actor is determined to return to Ukraine, on the condition of making himself effective. “I’m not sure what I can bring. I don’t spend my time texting the president [Volodymyr Zelensky] or his team while they are under siege and their people are being murdered, he adds. I’d probably send a message through the chief of staff like, ‘Here’s what I’m looking to do that I think is helpful’”.

Before leaving Poland to join the United States, Sean Penn wanted to participate in the war effort. With CORE, his humanitarian foundation, the actor signed an agreement in Krakow to help Ukrainians who have come to take refuge in the border country. In particular, the organization plans educational activities and the financing of renovation work on unoccupied premises in order to accommodate refugees.
