HanoiThe 50-year-old man, in Phu Tho, with laryngeal cancer, has had two surgery, still has difficulty speaking and breathing.
The patient smokes more than two packs of cigarettes a day from the age of 15 to the present; drink alcohol every day. Four years ago, he started to experience hoarseness, a lot of coughing, and his voice changed. The disease got worse, he lost his voice, lost his breath, always felt stuck in his throat. Doctors diagnosed laryngeal cancer, indicated to remove the lymph nodes and laryngeal tumors.
A year later, his health deteriorated greatly. He is a builder, has to take leave because he cannot do heavy work. Voice disappeared completely, only guttural sound. The doctor diagnosed a stenosis of the larynx, and indicated a second surgery. After the operation, he had to wear a laryngeal dilator continuously, often had a prolonged cough, difficulty breathing, difficulty speaking, and speechless.
In early March, he went to Hospital E for examination. “Just looking forward to getting rid of the laryngeal instrument,” he said.
Doctor Le Minh Ky, senior expert of the Department of Examination on Demand and International, said that the patient suffered from sequelae of fibrosis scarring, laryngeal stenosis, causing difficulty breathing. The laryngeal tube was placed in the patient’s throat prolonged, causing him to cough a lot.
The treatment team decided to use a method of laryngoplasty to restore voice to the patient. This is also the first patient with laryngeal narrow scarring in Vietnam to have a vocal reconstruction surgery to restore voice.
The doctor removed the stenosis of the larynx, then used the body-friendly laryngeal cartilage to shape the new larynx for the patient. The laryngeal is a small cartilage located at the bottom of the tongue, which is responsible for preventing food from entering the trachea. Since then, the patient no longer suffers from coughing attacks. This technique requires the operator to skillfully calculate to shape the new larynx just right, not too wide to avoid choking food into the airway or not too narrow to avoid difficulty breathing.
“After shaping, the patient has less recurrence of laryngeal stenosis and the most important thing is that the laryngeal function is guaranteed, breathing naturally, speaking immediately after surgery … This is really a solution. effective in the treatment of common complications after laryngeal tumor surgery “, Dr. Ky said.
On March 17, the patient restored his voice. He can sing and talk.
According to specialists, the cure rate of laryngeal cancer is about 80% if detected early symptoms. However, most patients are subjective and ignorant, so they can only detect it when the disease is in a late stage.
Doctors recommend getting medical attention early if hoarseness persists for more than 3 weeks. People over 40 years old need to be tested and examined more carefully when there are signs of hoarseness because the symptoms of laryngeal cancer are early, common and sometimes unique.
People should also be examined early when there are signs of pharyngitis, tonsillitis … This is also a common sign of laryngeal cancer.
