Information was authorized by Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long at the Conference on introducing vaccines against Covid-19 in Vietnam, on the morning of September 30.

As one of 42 countries that can produce vaccines, Vietnam is speeding up the research process for the Covid-19 vaccine. The Ministry of Health has directed manufacturers to increase vaccine research and production activities.

The four Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers in Vietnam are the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (Ivac), the No. 1 Vaccine and Biological Company (Vabiotech), and the Research Center for Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (Polyvac). , Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Company.

“It is expected that in 2021 there will be at least one manufacturer conducting phase two and third clinical trials in Vietnam”, Mr. Long said.

Acting Health Minister did not specify when in 2021 the Covid-19 vaccine could be tested in humans.

Usually the clinical trial of a vaccine must go through three mandatory stages. Phase one trial on healthy adults, sample size 30-50 volunteers, with the primary goal of assessing the safety of the vaccine. Phase two was performed on healthy adults, with a minimum sample size of 200, to assess the vaccine’s safety and immunogenicity, and to select an appropriate dose and schedule.

Phase three was conducted on a sample size of at least 500 people, with controls, in multiple locations, using the vaccination regimen selected from phase 2, to assess the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in a single group. Larger communities, close to the target audience (that will use the vaccine), including children and the elderly.

Test results in previous stages must ensure safety within permissible limits before proceeding to the next stage.

Mr. Long said that the outbreaks are now under control in all localities. From September 3 to the present, Vietnam has not recorded any cases of infection in the community. In order to control and control epidemics and bring life back to normal, Vietnam has actively implemented research activities on domestic production of vacicne as well as increasing access to vaccines in the world.

Vietnam is one of 92 countries participating in the program “Global Covid-19 Vaccine Access Solution” (Covax Facility) and is committed to support by the Global Vaccine Alliance (Gavi). With the goal of providing 2 billion doses of vaccine to countries by the end of 2021 to about 20% of the population of the member states of the Covax Facility, Vietnam will have the opportunity to access and be provided with vaccines early. Gavi’s directory.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of September 24, there are 187 Covid-19 vaccines under study, of which 38 are in clinical trials. Of these, 9 vaccines were clinically tested in phase three; three vaccines in phase three; Twenty-six types are in the pipeline or in preparation for phase one implementation, and 149 are in pre-clinical research.

Vietnam ordered vaccines from three countries: Russia, the US and the UK. The research and production of Covid-19 vaccine in the UK has made a great progress, the vaccines produced by this country are in the process of completing phase three clinical trials and are close to the “target” to ensure supply for the international market.

In addition to two vaccine supplies from Covax and domestic companies, Vietnam is actively seeking other sources through direct discussions with foreign manufacturers.
