Videos and photos on social media show that the earthquake and aftershocks caused landslides and damage to buildings, including homes built for people affected by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in 2008, in the province on the Tibetan Plateau. School children ran out of their classrooms as soon as the earthquake was felt, while residents ran out into the streets, followed by a series of aftershocks.
Telecom damaged in some parts
Telecom was damaged in some parts of both the counties due to the quake, but some optical cables have been restored after emergency repairs, according to PTI.
Ya’an activated the second highest level of emergency response for the earthquake and is assessing the damage. More than 4,500 personnel from emergency rescue and other departments have been sent to the quake-hit areas.
In 2008, China’s deadliest 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in Sichuan Province, killing 90,000 people.
