UK: Environmental activists protest in London, 38 arrested

Britain Protest: In Britain’s capital London, environmental activists demonstrated in many places on Monday and blocked major congested roads, due to which traffic was affected in many places. The police have arrested 38 protesters. Environmental activists have called on the British government to free all homes from fossil fuels within a decade. An organization called Insulate Britain has been organizing protests in the capital London for the past several weeks. Many major roads of the capital have been blocked in these demonstrations.

The organization said 50 people had blocked four major roads in London, including the Blackwall Tunnel, one of the main routes to the River Thames in east London. Wandsworth Bridge in south London, Hangar Lane in west London and Arnos Grove to the north of the capital were also blocked. London’s Metropolitan Police said 38 protesters had been arrested for conspiring to block the highway and create public disturbances.

Here, Britain’s so-called “simplified” international travel system came into force from Monday, but it has not brought any relief to vaccinated Indians traveling to Britain. Britain had angered India by not recognizing Indian travelers who had taken both doses of the vaccine under new rules brought in last month.

This was done despite India-made Covishield being on the UK vaccines list. In response, India imposed the same rules on all British citizens and made PCR tests, and 10 days of isolation mandatory. Similar rules came into force for British citizens of India from Monday.
