Two weeks of fighting Covid-19 at the home of a Vietnamese woman in the US

AmericaReturning from a trip to the beach in Florida, Tram Nguyen, 34 years old, aching all over, thought she was hit by the wind.

On the second day, she did not have a fever but had chills. She was tired, “didn’t have the strength to do anything, just wanted to lie in bed”. The next day, her body was still unusually cold, she suspected that she had Covid-19 so she booked an appointment for a test at a CVS store near her house, at the end of April.

There are many places for people to go to get tested for Covid-19 in the US such as clinics, hospitals or chain stores selling drugs, pharmaceuticals, health care products like Walgreens, CVS… At these stores, People only need to drive cars past, not inside to ensure safety. Through the window, the medical staff gave the test kit package and instructed everyone to do it themselves, then put the test sample in a box according to regulations.

Insured people in the US will be tested for free. Without insurance, the cost ranges from 100-200 USD. “If you need immediate results, it’s expensive, but it costs less the next day,” Tram, now in Texas, shared with VnExpress about the experience of fighting Covid-19.

Receiving a positive result of nCoV via email, Ms. Tram asked to take a break from work. “I immediately closed the door to the outside world,” she said. Feeling exhausted, she cooked a pot of leaf water to sweat, but could not sit for long. When the pot of water was still a little hot, not completely cooled, she pulled the blanket off and climbed into bed to rest.

On the morning of the fifth day, she was more awake and could go to the garden to take care of the fruit trees. In the afternoon, she was cold and tired again, continuing to cook steamed water. She also began to lose her taste buds and lost her appetite. “Eating anything sweet or sour is only bitter,” Ms. Tram said.

On Friday, she took advantage of going to the garden to exercise, breathing the fresh air in the morning to increase her resistance. In the afternoon, she still feels cold. In the next three days, in addition to losing taste, she also had diarrhea, lost her sense of smell, and had to be placed right next to her nose to smell the smell.

On the 10th day, she recovered completely and did not have any symptoms. However, the Covid-19 test results are still positive. On the 15th day, she tested again, the result was negative.

Tram’s husband also tested positive for nCoV right after his wife, but got better, just a little chilled, no fever, little fatigue. The couple received negative results on the same day. Fortunately, mother-in-law and brother-in-law living in the same house are still healthy. Her mother-in-law who cooks for her children carefully uses gloves, washes her hands often, keeps a far distance, does not eat together. My brother-in-law also lives in a separate room.

According to Ms. Tram, the US media instructs people how to self-monitor at home, only when there are severe signs and difficulty breathing, they will go to the emergency room. While convalescing, she also learns from experiences of people who have had the disease before, sharing on social networks, each person has different symptoms. The main advice is still to take vitamins to strengthen resistance, take pain relievers and reduce fever.

Tram’s cousin, who lives in Seattle, Washington state, also contracted Covid-19 a few months ago. The 45-year-old cousin, who is healthy, has no underlying disease but becomes seriously ill, had to go to the emergency room, was given medicine to take home by the doctor and recovered after a month. “She had a fever, while I just had chills, no fever,” Ms. Tram said.

Recalling when traveling through Florida, the couple was “a bit subjective, going to hotels, restaurants, and restaurants not to protect themselves”, when they received a positive diagnosis, they felt very scared and worried.

“At that time, I felt exhausted, no longer had any strength, afraid of not having enough resistance and didn’t know what would happen,” Tram said about psychology when she first got sick. However, after a few days, she woke up feeling healthy, awake, gardening and planting trees, she felt optimistic again.

The US earlier this summer eased epidemic prevention because most people had been vaccinated against Covid-19. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people who have had two full doses of the vaccine do not need to wear a mask, even in indoor spaces.

Her family has not been vaccinated because at that time, there was a case after J&J was injected with blood clots and died. “The whole family is also psychologically confused, waiting to see how people react to the injection and then decide, but unfortunately got Covid-19,” Ms. Tram said. After that, the US press continued to let this vaccine be used because it was only a few special cases, not common.

After recovering from Covid-19, Ms. Tram advised to stay calm when sick. If it becomes severe and you feel short of breath, you need to go to the hospital for a timely examination. It is important to wash your hands with soap frequently and keep your distance from others. Drink fever reducer, orange juice or fresh lemon with vitamin C. Drink hot honey ginger lemon to keep body warm, sauna every day to feel comfortable. Magnesium and zinc can be added to strengthen the immune system.

After recovering from the disease, Tram’s husband went to get a Covid-19 vaccine. As for her, because she was just pregnant, the doctor advised to wait until the fetus is about 4-5 months before she should be vaccinated.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Vu, Cancer Research Institute of City of Hope, USA, said that when self-treating at home, people with Covid-19 need to do it seriously and responsibly, ensuring three main points including: minimizing You can infect others around you, take care of yourself to recover, observe symptoms of illness to know when to go to the emergency room.

To minimize the spread of infection to people around, it is advisable to arrange in a separate room to isolate from uninfected people in the home and pets because they can become carriers of the virus. If possible, use a private bathroom. If contact with family members or pets is necessary, wash your hands first and wear a mask.

Notify those who have been in close contact during the period of suspected Covid-19 infection, so that these people also have to be careful to get tested and prevent infecting others. “Most infected people can start spreading the virus from 48 hours after infection, this time is usually asymptomatic and test results are often negative,” Vu shared.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Do not share personal utensils, dishes. Wipe down all frequently touched surfaces, such as counters, countertops, and doorknobs with a disinfectant or alcohol solution.

Covid-19 is caused by nCoV, like most diseases caused by other viruses, the main treatment is “supportive treatment”, trying to “soothe”, “relieve” difficult symptoms. suffer, so that the body has time to strengthen the immune system to fight the virus. Most people who self-treat for Covid-19 will begin to recover and get well after two weeks.

Mild symptoms that people with Covid-19 can treat at home include fever, cough, chills, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste, sore throat, stuffy nose, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Treatment is by resting, providing enough water for the body, using common pain relievers and fever reducers when needed, supplementing vitamins and minerals for the body with fresh fruits. Supplement vitamin D by sun exposure every day for 5-10 minutes, drink milk, eat eggs… Sauna method can soothe sore throat and open airways, making breathing easier.

According to Dr. Vu, the rate of severe disease is proportional to age, increasing the risk for people with underlying diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, lung disease, cancer… and men with severe disease. more than women. When the disease worsens, the patient needs the support of medical staff and professional support equipment such as ventilators, dialysis machines, special drugs…

Warning signs of danger and need to go to the emergency room are feeling very short of breath, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, inability to stay awake, pale skin, lips or fingernails, loss of vitality. .

The Ministry of Health on July 14 decided to shorten the treatment time for asymptomatic F0 patients, with three groups under medical supervision at home. These changes were made in the context of the rapid increase in the number of infections in many localities, creating great pressure on the collection and treatment.
