Tour de France: an imprudent spectator causes an impressive fall of the peloton

An impressive domino effect. The first stage of the 2021 edition of the Tour de France was marked this Saturday, June 26 by a massive fall in the heart of the peloton, probably caused by the sign of a spectator.

While the runners had just passed the summit of the Saint-Rivoal hill (Finistère), an imprudent spectator, holding a sign on which was written “Go Opi Omi! »Turned his back to the peloton. The German Tony Martin struck head-on his sign, which protruded onto the road.

At the head of the peloton, the fall of the cyclist caused those of dozens of other riders, causing chaos.

The Tour calls spectators to order

According to “L’Equipe”, Tony Martin, quadruple world time trial champion, was severely injured during the incident and was bleeding profusely from his hand. Several cyclists had to be taken care of by medical teams, and German rider Jasha Sütterlin of Team DSM, injured, abandoned the race.

The incident briefly split the squad in two, before coming back together.

“We are happy to see the public on the side of the roads for this 2021 Tour de France. But for the Tour to be a success, please respect the safety of the riders! Don’t risk everything for a photo or to appear on television ”, tweeted the official Tour de France account as a reminder of basic security measures.

The first stage of the Tour de France, 197.8 kilometers long, must link Brest and Landerneau. For this 108th edition, the 184 runners will face more than 3,400 kilometers until the traditional finish on the Champs-Elysées in Paris on July 18.
