CDS Bipin Rawat Death: Several countries, including the US, Russia and Pakistan, on Wednesday condoled the death of Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat. General Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 others died in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The Air Force gave this information. The US Embassy here expressed its deepest condolences to the Rawat family and the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate helicopter crash. The US Embassy said in a statement that as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff, General Rawat led a historic period of transformation in the Indian Army.
Rawat was a close friend and partner of the US, who has played an important role in the US military’s growing defense cooperation with India, the statement said. “During a five-day visit to the United States in September, they discussed military development and opportunities to increase our cooperation with like-minded countries,” the embassy said in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with the Indian people and the Indian Army and we wish Group Captain Varun Singh a full recovery,” the statement said. British High Commissioner Alex Ellis also condoled the death of General Rawat and described him as a wise man and a brave soldier. Ellis tweeted, ‘Sad news. General Rawat was a wise man, a brave soldier, a pioneer and a generous host to me. We mourn the loss of lives of Rawat and others in this horrific accident.
Russian ambassador expressed grief
Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev said he came to know about the sudden death of General Bipin Rawat, Madhulika Rawat and 11 other officers in the helicopter crash. Kudashev said that India has lost its great patriot and dedicated hero.
“Russia has lost a very close friend who has played a big role in promoting our special bilateral and privileged strategic partnership,” he tweeted. Goodbye, friend! Goodbye, Commander!’. Australian High Commissioner to India Barry O’Farrell also expressed his condolences to the families of General Rawat and other deceased. He said that India-Australia relations have flourished during the tenure of General Rawat.
French envoy expressed grief by tweeting
French envoy to India Emmanuel Lenin tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the accidental death of CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife and several defense officers. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the Indian Armed Forces. He said, ‘We will remember CDS Rawat as a great military leader and supporter of France-India defense relations.’ Top military officials of Pakistan also condoled the “tragic death” of General Rawat, his wife and 11 others.
The Pakistan Army spokesperson said in a brief statement posted on Twitter that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Nadeem Raza and the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed their condolences.
