Until a few years ago he was considered an amiable maker of popular comedies. The times are changing. During the first confinement, reruns of Philippe de Broca’s films broke audience records on all channels.

His last wife, Alexandra de Broca, does not hesitate to speak “Broca effect” on TV, especially with Cartridge, The magnificent or Chouans! Slowly, for the past fifteen years or so, cinema lovers have rediscovered – even re-evaluated – the thirty films by this director as brilliant as Epicurean, who has remained somewhat apart in French cinema.
Of course, his signing on six films with Jean-Paul Belmondo contributes to the fact that he has never been forgotten. The recent publication of a richly illustrated retrospective book, which looks behind the scenes of the creation of De Broca’s cinema, established by Philippe Sichler and Laurent Benyayer, properly sheds light on the immense talent of this long disliked and relegated filmmaker.
