Earlier in the day, there was a strong demonstration demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The protesters had entered the President by breaking the barricades of the police. However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had already left Rashtrapati Bhavan. The protesters took over the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Protesters were seen everywhere, inside and outside, around the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Meanwhile, demonstrations started outside Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s residence demanding resignation.

After the crisis deepened in Sri Lanka, an important meeting of party leaders was held at the president’s residence. Following a massive request, the speaker wrote to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign. After this news came that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has agreed to resign but Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has refused to step down.

After the announcement of the PM’s resignation, some Sri Lankan MPs said that an all-party interim government would be appointed in the next few days.
