The ‘lure’ of the stroke

Patients with diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, smoking … have a high risk of stroke.

The Stroke Unit, Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, intervened urgently, promptly saving the life of a 52-year-old man who had a stroke at Tan Son Nhat airport, on December 8.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Phuong Nga, Head of Neuroscience Department, said while waiting for the time to board the plane, this person suddenly collapsed, unable to speak, and did not recognize acquaintances. After two hours, he was completely paralyzed on the right side, losing his language and perception.

The test results and diagnostic imaging confirm, the man has an acute cerebral infarction due to obstruction of a large brain artery. He was taken to the hospital early, in emergency time in the “golden hour”, promptly injected with a decongestant drug, releasing blood clots causing embolism. However, the recirculation is not thorough, the patient progresses more seriously, the doctors have to intervene intravascular, use tools, directly take out the blood clot.

Currently, the brain area behind the block has been re-perfused. Patient is awake, can sit up, has normal perception, calls to ask questions but still has difficulty speaking. The right half of the person is paralyzed and has been able to move slightly, the limbs have recovered quite a bit.

Russian doctors shared, stroke, or stroke is a condition in which a part of the brain is damaged suddenly, because the blood vessels that feed the brain are blocked (infarction) or ruptured (hemorrhage). Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability.

The more common form of cerebral infarction is about 70-80%. Currently, there are many treatments, which can re-ventilate blood vessels urgently, within a time frame of 4-6 hours, even 24 hours, expanding the chances of saving lives of patients. The proportion of patients with cerebral hemorrhage is less, but the condition, risk of death and complications are worse.

“The man above has a history of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. We suspect these are the two main culprits causing the patient stroke,” said the Russian doctor.

According to doctors, the causes of stroke are many, but people with dyslipidemia (fatty blood), cardiovascular diseases, smokers, belong to the highest risk group. This has been proven in practice, through the stroke cases recorded in many hospitals. The stroke organizations around the world have many studies confirming these risk factors.

Patients with atrial fibrillation, heart valves, arrhythmias, congenital heart defects … the heart is not working well, the pumping of blood is not smooth. As a result, the heart can suddenly stop blood flow to the brain, or a blood clot formed from an abnormal heartbeat travels to the brain, getting stuck causing a stroke. Or, the process of atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes, fatty blood, tobacco addiction is higher than normal. Atheroma can narrow the lumen of the blood vessel, preventing machine from circulating. They burst, forming a blood clot, causing a stroke.

With high blood pressure is similar, but more serious, harm. When blood pressure increases, the force of the blood on the artery walls is higher than necessary. For a long time, blood vessels are damaged, not resilient well. The circuit can rupture when a blood clot presses, causing brain hemorrhage, the Russian doctor explained.

People who have not had a stroke but carry high risk factors as mentioned above, Russian doctors affirmed, preventive treatment is the most effective. When patients adhere to treatment, control underlying cardiovascular disease, increase blood pressure, cholesterol, and have good diabetes, the risk will decrease. It is recommended to quit smoking.

People who have had a stroke, must find out the cause to treat the root. After getting rid of the risk of death, it is necessary to take medication to prevent recurrence and to exercise rehabilitation physiotherapy.

Russian doctors recommend that the elderly, people at risk of stroke should eat less salt, less fat, less sugar like cardiovascular patients. Pay attention to your body’s cues. Whenever you feel dizzy, half numb, distorted mouth, speech difficult, even only transient and disappear, you should think of a stroke immediately and get medical attention promptly.

“Young people are also ‘prey’ for stroke. Except for cerebral vascular malformation as the leading cause, the urban lifestyle with fast food, alcohol, cigarettes, inactivity … is The road to stroke, “shared the Russian doctor.
