5G mobile networks are being tested commercially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam is also one of the rare countries in the world to test 5G networks with self-produced equipment.
On the morning of December 17, Vietnam IT Journalists Club held a seminar “What opportunities will 5G bring to Vietnam?” Here, many stories have been shared by experts, managers, and businesses to provide the most complete information on issues related to 5G and the deployment of this service in Vietnam as well as the impact of 5G to socio-economic development.
Market demand will determine the speed at which 5G is deployed
According to Nguyen Phong Nha – Deputy Director of the Telecommunications Department (Ministry of Information and Communications), the Ministry of Information and Communications sets a target that by 2030 will cover 5G mobile networks nationwide. Then, people will be able to access and use broadband internet at low prices.
To realize this, the Ministry of Information and Communications has quickly developed a telecommunications strategy, aiming to upgrade 4G network infrastructure and soon commercialize 5G networks. Currently, there are 3 operators Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone have been licensed to test 5G commercial with a certain scale.

The representative of the Telecommunications Department said that, in addition to providing mobile network services, businesses can also develop software and equipment for 5G networks. This is a challenge but also an opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to participate in the market providing terminal equipment.
The 5G test is also an opportunity for carriers to build appropriate business models, project pricing and resource usage costs before 5G mobile networks are officially licensed.
After the testing process, the operators will have to send reports evaluating test results on technical features, commercial capabilities, market demand, … to state management agencies, specifically in This is the Ministry of Information and Communications completing the legal basis.

According to Nha, the 5G deployment in Vietnam will depend entirely on the market demand. Therefore, it is possible that 5G may not be widely covered across the country, but in the short term will be some big cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City.
The reason for choosing these locations is because these are areas with high density of mobile device users and high demand for speed. In addition, 5G can also be deployed in industrial zones where there is a need to design, operate, and install smart factories, the Ministry of Information and Communications expects to soon deploy this service right in the year. 2021.
Commercial trials: The first step to commercializing 5G
Sharing at the seminar, the representative of VinaPhone said that, through the process of technical testing in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the 5G network gave the download speed 10 times faster, still delayed. 10 times less than 4G network.
With MobiFone, this operator has completed the installation and is testing the 5G speed. Under standard conditions, the results are relatively satisfactory when download speeds reach around 1.3 Gbps. According to forecasts, the speed of 5G has not stopped here, but will increase even higher.
|The actual average speed when testing commercial 5G in Vietnam is currently about 500-600 Mbps.|
According to Viettel, the entire network of this unit currently has about 8,000 terminals that are compatible with the 5G network. However, due to the narrow coverage area, only a few hundred devices are currently connected to the test network. The average speed is currently about 500-600 Mbps.
In another perspective, Viettel representative said that, in addition to testing 5G network services, the operator is also cooperating with Vingroup to develop 5G broadcasting equipment. Self-made devices currently account for about 15% of the transceivers being tested by this carrier. Mastering the technology of manufacturing network equipment will play an important role, helping Vietnam to control and ensure safety for critical telecommunications infrastructure.

In general, all carriers said that during commercial trials being carried out in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, users will not need to change SIM cards to use 5G. Instead, they just need to own phones with 5G connectivity.
Talking about the commercial problem when implementing 5G, experts say that this depends on many factors, including timing, package policy, frequency cost, … It takes time to calculate and find a commercial solution to the 5G problem. However, in terms of charges, 5G mobile plans will basically be equivalent to 4G networks.
