Taliban Deploys Additional Forces: The Taliban deployed additional forces around Kabul airport on Saturday to prevent large numbers of people from gathering after a suicide attack two days ago. The US has to complete the withdrawal of all its troops by August 31 and before this attack took place.
The Taliban have set up additional checkpoints on the roads leading to the airport, which house Taliban fighters in uniform. Areas where large crowds had gathered over the past two weeks in hopes of fleeing the country after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan were now largely empty.
After the recent suicide bombings at Kabul airport that killed 169 Afghan civilians and 13 American soldiers, US President Joe Biden promised to retaliate. Several Western countries have completed their operations to evacuate people from Afghanistan ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for the withdrawal of all US forces.
An Afghan who worked as a translator for the US military said he was with a group of people who were allowed to leave and tried to reach the airport late Friday. He said that he was stopped on the fourth after passing through three checkpoints.
He said the Taliban told those people they were told by the Americans to only let American passport holders go. After returning to Kabul, the man told the Associated Press, “I am very disappointed for my future.”
According to the US, more than 100,000 people have been safely evacuated through Kabul airport, but thousands are struggling to leave the country and may not be evacuated until Tuesday.
