China Earthquake: Three people were killed and 60 others were injured in a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Luxian County in China’s Sichuan province on Thursday. The China Earthquake Administration sent a task force to guide disaster relief work at the site, Xinhua news agency reported.
A total of 890 commanders and fighters of adjoining fire and rescue brigades have been mobilized, while another 4,600 rescuers are on standby. A total of 737 houses collapsed in the incident, 72 were severely damaged, while 7,290 were damaged to some extent.
According to news agency IANS, collapsed walls and houses were seen in the epicenter area on the way to the earthquake-hit Xiaming township. Electricity has stalled in most of the houses in the city. Amid heavy rains in Fuji Basti, rescue workers go door-to-door searching for people in damaged homes and taking them to temporary shelters.
According to the local government, as of Thursday morning, more than 6,900 affected residents have been shifted, and more than 10,000 people have been shifted to temporary shelters.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 4.33 am. Approved by the provincial government, the earthquake relief headquarters in Sichuan has activated the level-II response, the second largest in China’s four-level earthquake emergency response system. Some telecom base stations and cables were damaged. According to railway officials, the Luzhou high-speed railway station has been closed. All coal mines have been ordered to stop underground operations and to evacuate miners from the mines.
