Sri Lanka’s ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will now seek refuge in Thailand, will arrive soon

Sri Lanka Crisis: The troubles of former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa are not taking the name of lessening. According to reports, Rajapaksa is scheduled to reach Thailand on Thursday. He had fled Sri Lanka due to previous massive protests and has since been seeking asylum in another Southeast Asian country. Sri Lanka, surrounded by a huge economic crisis in seven decades, saw huge public protests and demonstrations, due to which Rajapaksa went to Singapore via Maldives on 14 July, it was said in the reports.

In the past, thousands of protesters had camped at the President’s Office and the President’s residence. Due to this, former military officer Rajapaksa had to resign from the post of President. Rajapaksa became the first President of Sri Lanka, who had to resign his term in between. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Sunday that it was not the right time for Rajapaksa to return home as it could escalate political tensions, according to the Wall Street Journal.

What did Ranil Wickremesinghe say about Rajapaksa?

According to the report, Ranil Wickremesinghe had said, “I don’t think this is the right time for him to return. I have no sign of him returning soon. There were also reports that the current government of Sri Lanka has urged Singapore to grant Rajapaksa two more weeks. It was said that Rajapaksa’s visa in Singapore has expired.
