He started his schooling from Avisavella and later continued at Prince of Wales College (Moratawa), Ananda College (Colombo) before entering Colombo University. Without completing his higher education in Sri Lanka, he traveled to the United States to study economics at the University of Illinois.

He started the first leftist political party, the Lanka Samaj Party (LSSP), along with several of these allies in 1935, which was a milestone in the rebel movement against imperialism and colonialism. Philip has faced more political whirlwinds than any famous political leader in this country.
