Sri Lanka crisis: People forced to protest on the streets for two meals a day

Sri Lanka Crisis: The economic crisis in Sri Lanka is getting worse day by day, with many people including the unemployed taking part in the protest against the government to get two meals a day. Hundreds of people, including daily wage workers and those who lost their jobs due to the current crisis, line up to receive food provided by a Colombo-based trust. Social activist Akshala Fernando told ANI, “We have started distributing food from April 9. We want the President to resign, as he is unable to take care of the people and has failed to rule the country.”

Fernando said his trust receives donations from around the world, including money, goods and food. “So far we have distributed food to over a thousand people,” he said.

‘Many people come here’
The social worker further said, “Many people, including working and unemployed people, come here. Also, there are some people who have lost their jobs due to the ongoing protests, saying they don’t care about losing their jobs. Because they are protesting for their generation.”

Sherwin Ranatunga, another person of this trust said that there are different types of people who are coming here from all over Sri Lanka. “They are far away by bus, taxi and train and we provide that for everyone.” “We provide food to all, rich and poor, without any discrimination,” he said.

Sri Lanka is facing the most severe economic crisis
Sri Lanka is going through the most severe economic crisis ever since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis arose mainly because of a lack of foreign exchange, which means that the country is unable to pay for imports of staple foods and fuels.

Thousands of protesters have been on the streets across Sri Lanka since April 9, as the government has run out of funds for imports. The prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing.
