Sport will be part of the specialty courses at the baccalaureate

The sports teachers have just won a decisive match. The Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer, who is also in charge of sports, formalized, on Tuesday, December 8 on BFMTV / RMC, the creation, from next September, at the high school of a specialty education devoted to their discipline.

Four hours a week in first, six in final

This means that Physical and Sports Education (EPS), already present in the common core, can, in addition, be taken among the three specialties of the first class (at the rate of 4 hours per week). And that it will be possible to keep this teaching in final among the two specialties (6 hours per week) which will be taken in the final exam in the baccalaureate, alongside philosophy and the grand oral.

“We have been campaigning for this creation for two years”, recalls Benoît Hubert, general secretary of SNEP-FSU, union of teachers of PE. “Our discipline was the only one not to benefit from a specialty education. “

Entitled “physical education, sports practices and cultures”, the future teaching ” will integrate other disciplinary fields (sciences, humanities…) by associating practical contributions and theoretical contents ”, specifies the ministry.

In a letter of referral to the Superior Council of Programs, responsible for proposing a project and recommendations for the end of January 2021, Jean-Michel Blanquer lists the objectives assigned to this new specialty.

It is “Allow students to develop a deep and balanced practice of physical, sporting and artistic activities; transversal skills (self-confidence; management of emotions; critical thinking; sense of commitment; teamwork, project work, etc.) essential to the success of their career; a critical and enlightened look at their practice and its challenges ”. It is also about acquiring “Knowledge of the diversity of professional sectors linked to sport and physical practice”.

A gradual rise in power

It may be wise to choose this course if you then want to apply on Parcoursup for a license in sciences and techniques of physical and sporting activities (Staps), one of the most requested courses at the university.

Interested second year students will be able to retain this new specialty among their wishes in the next few months, in the second term. Be careful, however, like part of the twelve other already existing specialty courses, “physical education, sports practices and cultures” will not be offered in all establishments.

Only a hundred public and private high schools under contract will offer this education from the next school year, said the ministry. Before a ramp-up at the start of the 2022 school year.
