The habit of sleeping 7 hours a night helps the brain to perceive and process information best according to a recent study of over 500,000 people.

The 500 adults involved in the study ranged in age from 38 to 73 in the UK. They were asked about their sleep habits, mental health and happiness, and completed a series of cognitive tests to assess brain function. A small group of about 40,000 people had their brains scanned and tested in a lab to gather genetic information.

Research shows that sleeping 7 hours a night is ideal for mental health. Those who slept about 7 hours per night had better cognitive results than other subjects. Brain scans showed that people who slept about seven hours a night had fewer structural changes in brain regions involved in cognitive processing and memory than study participants who slept too little or too much. Participants who regularly slept about 7 hours per night, which did not deviate too much from this pattern, had better cognitive function and mental health than those whose sleep patterns varied greatly or were excessively rested or insufficient.
