Should moles be removed?

Moles can be a sign of skin cancer, so it should be checked carefully before removing to avoid confusion and have to be done at the hospital.

Doctor Le Minh Chau, Department of Dermatology – Skin Aesthetics, Hospital of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, said that most moles are harmless, so it is not necessary to remove them, except for cosmetic effects or irritation. rubbing reaction.

There are many methods of removing moles such as electrocautery, laser, acid dot, liquid nitrogen or surgery. Depending on the location and size of the mole, the doctor will choose the optimal method. For small moles, the doctor removes with a laser because it can precisely target the point to be removed and does not cause too much damage to the surrounding tissue.

Do not remove too many moles at once because it can make it difficult to take care of the skin after removal, leading to infection and bad scarring. Some moles may have roots located deep under the skin and cannot be burned off in one treatment, so they will recur.

Absolutely do not remove moles at home by folk methods such as apple cider vinegar, garlic, razor blades … “These ways increase the risk of infection or leave permanent scars,” said Dr. Chau. .

After removing moles with laser, you should keep it dry, avoid standing water in the area of the sting, do not rub or scratch to cause skin damage. Regularly clean and disinfect around the wound with physiological saline, which helps to minimize the accumulation of bacteria, dead cells or mucus. Do not allow soap or hot water to penetrate and cause ulcers. Use the medication prescribed by your doctor and let the wound heal on its own.

After removing moles, it is recommended to add some nutritional groups in vitamin A such as pumpkin, gac, tomatoes, carrots, and fish; fruit rich in vitamin C such as tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, orange, kiwi, strawberry, vitamin E, zinc, Omega 3… Drink two to three liters of water per day, accelerate the healing process.

Apply sunscreen, wear accessories (hats, glasses, hats, umbrellas…) and wear long clothes to cover and prevent darkening in the newly treated skin. Limit going to places that are polluted, dusty, exhaust… so that the skin is well protected.

When you want to remove moles, you need to go to a reputable facility to check, avoid confusing benign moles with other types of skin cancer and remove by conventional methods. “Mistakes not only aggravate the disease but also delay and make it difficult to diagnose and treat the disease later on,” said Dr. Chau.
