VIDEO – The studios of the Disney group give a first glimpse of their new feature film and this superhero cut out to conquer China.
The global pandemic has shaken up the heavyweight film program a bit, but now that a way out of the crisis seems to be definitively beginning in the United States, the trailers are ebbing and blooming with the arrival of spring. Second Marvel superhero movie expected this year – behind the very late Black widow – Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Monday gave itself a thunderous trailer five months before its scheduled release in September.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (The Way of Justice), the film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, the first Asian superhero to be featured in the Marvel films. As Black panther who, in 2018, gave pride of place to African-American actors, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will share the top of the bill with comedians and comedians of Asian origins: the Canadian Simu Liu will be surrounded by Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung, and Awkwafina.
Trained from an early age to become a perfect assassin alongside his father and his mysterious 10-ring organization, Shang-Chi manages to escape this grim environment to live and grow up in the United States. Years later, his past catches up with him, rekindling old wounds and an unfinished conflict with his father. “Shang-Chi’s core arc in the comics is truly a family drama», Recalled producer Jonathan Schwartz in an interview with Entertainment Weekly .

We wanted to make sure Shang-Chi was like all of us.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton
Created for Marvel comics in 1973, the year of Operation Dragon and at the height of Bruce Lee mania and Kung-Fu fashion, the character belongs to a new generation of American literature, distanced from the frankly Mephistophelic imagery of a Fu Manchu with the hints of Yellow Peril. This embarrassment was felt, however, in the production of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the historical father of the hero in the comics – Fu Manchu himself – having been replaced by a new character (Wenwu, played by Tony Leung).
In a context marked by the recent resurgence of violence in the United States against people of Asian origin, Simu Liu wants to believe that the film is more necessary than ever: “We were all very careful not to fall into stereotypes when we started to define this character and his journey during the film.“. The Hawaiian director of Japanese origin Destin Daniel Cretton, also agrees: “We wanted to make sure Shang-Chi was like all of us“. Unlike upcoming Disney releases – like Black widow , Luca and Cruella – planned to appear both in cinema and in streaming, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings should be shown, first, in dark rooms.
