Schools invited to pay tribute to Samuel Paty

Schools are invited by the Ministry of National Education to pay tribute on October 15 to the teacher Samuel Paty, a year after his assassination for showing in class caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. “Schools and establishments may in particular organize a minute of silence in [sa] memory (…) and devote an hour of class to a time of tribute and discussions, the content of which will be left to the choice of the teams according to their respective situation ”, is it written Thursday, October 7 on the Eduscol site, which provides educational content to teachers.

The commemoration of the assassination of Samuel Paty “Is an opportunity for reflection and discussion with the students. This time may in particular take the form, from cycle 3 [CM1, CM2, 6e] of a specific sequence on the construction of a critical mind, as well as on the profession of professor, its role and its legitimacy ”, according to the text. A letter from the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer was sent to the rectors of the academy on this subject.

The content of this class hour “Will depend on the age of the students. For “Start the discussion”, “Documents (poems, speeches, literature, reflection texts and iconographic documents) accompanied by avenues of analysis and proposals for activities related to freedom of expression, the values ​​of the Republic and the role of the school can also be used as supports for this session ».

Samuel Paty, 47, was assassinated on October 16, 2020 near his college in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines) by Abdoullakh A., who accused him of showing caricatures of Mohammed to his students. Emmanuel Macron will receive the teacher’s parents on Saturday, October 16.
