Russian citizen hacked US computer system and earned $82 million

Russian NewsThe US has accused a Russian man of hacking US networks, stealing insider information and fraud. It is alleged that the Russian man defrauded American investors of $ 82 million. According to US officials, using information stolen during the hacking of computer networks, illegally traded shares of companies and earned millions of US dollars. To answer these allegations, America has extradited that Russian man.

US Attorney Nathaniel Mendel said Vladislav Klyushin, 41, was arrested in Sion, Switzerland on March 21 and extradited to the US on December 18. He earned a total of 82 million US dollars in this manner from 2018 to 2020.

US officials said the other four suspects are still on the run. One of them is a former official in the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate, known as the GRU, who was previously indicted in July 2018 for his alleged role in a Russian attempt to interfere in the 2016 US elections.

How was the fraud done?
According to an FBI affidavit in the case, the accused accessed files relating to earnings of several prominent US companies, including Tesla, Snap Inc., Roku, Nielsen and Kohl’s, before they were made public. On several occasions, hackers used computer servers located in Massachusetts.

The accused used to buy and trade shares through brokerage accounts by getting the financial information of the company ahead of time. If a company was about to report positive financial results, they would buy the shares of that company and if a company was about to report bad results, they would sell the shares. They had obtained the names and passwords of the employees by hacking the computer network. Thereafter, they used to misrepresent themselves as employees and also used various methods to hide their activities.
