Russia Ukraine War: Russia withdrew from the UN tourism body. The United Nations World Tourism Organization gave this information on Wednesday ahead of a vote to suspend Moscow’s membership over the attack on Ukraine.
“Russia has announced its intention to withdraw from the UNWTO,” the UNWTO said in a tweet, adding that Russia’s suspension is “effective immediately”. The UNWTO announced in March that it wanted to suspend Russia for Moscow’s attack on Ukraine.
UNWTO said – voting will take place
The decision is expected to be approved by two-thirds of its 159 member states at a two-day extraordinary general assembly in Madrid on Wednesday. The UNWTO said voting would take place, although Russia said it was withdrawing from the body to allow member states to “have their say”. The body said it has met for the first time to consider the suspension of any of its members.
Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili tweeted: “Our principles are clear: promoting tourism for peace and universal respect for human rights.” “Only members that adhere to it can be part of the UNWTO,” said Georgia’s former economic development minister (whose country was invaded by Russia in 2008).
What is UNWTO?
UNWTO An intergovernmental body that promotes tourism and facilitates international trade between nations, the UNWTO is based in Madrid. It was established in 1975. The agency, which employs some 150 people, has warned that the impact of the Kovid-19 pandemic caused by conflict in Ukraine will further delay the difficult rise of the global tourism sector.
