Prevention of ear, nose and throat diseases for children during the season change

The weather changes erratically due to the change of seasons, many children cough, stuffy nose, sore throat, family members need to be detected early to handle, absolutely do not arbitrarily use antibiotics.

In the past few weeks, hospitals in Hanoi have been constantly overloaded with pediatric patients due to respiratory diseases, especially the National Children’s Hospital, Bach Mai, E and even private hospitals. In addition to the overload of outpatients, hospitals struggled to arrange beds for inpatients, even matching three to four children to one bed for care. A doctor takes care of 20 to 30 children, the work is hectic.

On September 23, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Bich Dao, Department of Ear, Nose and Throat, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, said that the weather changes, creating favorable conditions for bacteria and viruses to multiply. Children with immature immune systems, the body has not yet adapted, are susceptible to respiratory diseases with many symptoms, of which cough is common. This year, influenza A broke out off-season, coming earlier than every year. People no longer adhere to wearing masks as much as before, increasing the risk of spreading infectious diseases.

According to Dr. Dao, when the season changes, children easily stuffy nose, have to breathe through the mouth, so the throat is dry and burning. Mucus from the nose flows down the throat, causing the child to get stuck in the throat or cough and spit up often; heavy breathing, loud snoring at night, occasional episodes of suffocation and cough due to laryngospasm. In infants, stuffy nose makes suckling difficult, sucking is not as long as before. Some children have recurrent eye inflammation because of the infection from the nose going up, if the eye treatment alone will not completely solve (the eye has a tear duct down the nose), these children must have more specialized examination. Otorhinolaryngology. Many children have a runny nose, hearing problems, and earaches. In severe cases purulent discharge, hearing loss.

80% of children’s disease is caused by a virus, so only use medicine to treat symptoms such as fever, cough, expectorant, anti-stuffy nose… so that the child’s body is able to produce antibodies against itself. these diseases. Parents should not arbitrarily use antibiotics, causing the body to lose its resistance function, depending on the drug when sick, so it is easy to get infected.

“Continuous use of antibiotics will damage some immature organs of children such as liver, kidney, pancreas …”, the doctor recommended.

Wear a mask for children every time they go out, limit taking them to crowded places, because they are easily infected when the body is not resistant enough. Keep baby’s neck, chest and abdomen warm when it’s cold, avoid places with drafts. Improve physical condition, strengthen the resistance of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, drop the nose for children, instruct the correct way to blow the nose so as not to push pus and germs into the middle ear or into the sinuses.

Fully vaccinated children. When children get sick, parents need to pay attention to nutrition for quick recovery, give foods processed in liquid form, easy to digest such as porridge, stews, vegetable broth…

Increase protein-rich foods from meat, fish, eggs, poultry, whole grains, low-fat dairy products… Children should eat more green vegetables and fresh fruits rich in vitamins, especially vitamins. C from orange juice, lemon, grapefruit, watermelon… to support increased resistance. If the child is tired, anorexic, should divide the meal into 5-6 times a day to make it easier to eat and absorb nutrients better.

Hanoi has three circulating epidemics, including Covid-19, dengue fever and influenza. In addition, from early 2022 to mid-September, the total number of detected adenovirus cases was 1,316. The overall rate of hospitalized children with Adenovirus accounts for about 4% of the total number of inpatients; 7 deaths. The Department of Preventive Medicine, the Ministry of Health asked localities to strengthen prevention of disease caused by this virus.
