President Rajapaksa bowed down after pushing Sri Lanka into trouble

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has admitted that he made mistakes that plunged the country into its worst economic crisis in decades. The President also resolved to rectify his mistakes. Rajapaksa on Monday formed a new cabinet of 17 ministers, in which his brother Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is the only member from his family. The President admitted his mistake before the new cabinet.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa said, “In the last two and a half years, we have faced many challenges. Kovid-19, debt burden and some mistakes were ours.” He said, “They need to be rectified. We have to fix them and move on. We have to win the trust of the people again.” Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he regretted the decision to ban chemical fertilizers in 2020, which led to a sharp decline in food production in the country and led to massive protests in the country. He said his decision was “a mistake” and corrective steps were being taken now.

Rajapaksa banned the use of imported fertilizers in mid-2020 to implement a green agriculture policy with organic fertilizers. The President also said that his government should have gone to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) long ago for relief and not going to the IMF was a mistake.

The annual meeting of the IMF is being held in Washington this week. Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Ali Sebri and other officials have left for this. Sri Lanka is reeling from an unprecedented economic crisis and the country is facing a severe foreign exchange crunch, making it unable to pay for imports of food and fuel. Sri Lanka has approached China and India for emergency loans to buy food and fuel.
