Blast in Kabul: A powerful explosion took place on Tuesday in a posh area of Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, where several senior government officials, including the defense minister, live. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the attack, but several small explosions as well as gunshots could be heard.
Home Minister Mirwais Stanikzai said the blast took place in the posh Sherpur area, a highly protected part of the capital known as the Green Zone. This is the first blast in the capital in recent times.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but it happened as Taliban insurgents are moving forward with an offensive that is putting pressure on provincial capitals in the south and west of the country. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for some recent attacks in Kabul, but no one has yet claimed responsibility for many attacks. However, the government is blaming the Taliban and the Taliban is blaming the government.
Taliban capture nine out of 10 districts in southern Afghanistan’s provincial capital
Meanwhile, the Taliban’s advance in southern Afghanistan continued on Tuesday and captured nine of the 10 districts of the capital of Helmand province. Residents and officials have given this information. At the same time, Afghan forces conducted air strikes to save the city of Lashkar Gah with the help of America. The withdrawal of Lashkar Gah will be a major turning point in the Taliban offensive, which has intensified attacks over the past several months amid the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from the war-torn country. It will be the first provincial capital to be captured by the Taliban.
Residents of the city, speaking to The Associated Press over the phone, said the fighting has imprisoned them and they are unable to leave their homes even for basic supplies. They say that Taliban fighters are roaming freely on the streets and they have taken control of all except one district of Lashkar Gah. A unit of specific commands has been dispatched from Kabul to assist the Afghan forces. The government occupies important government buildings, including the local police and army headquarters.
