Omicron cases are decreasing, but WHO warns about sub-variant BA.2

Omicron Variant: The Omicron variant is slowing down across the world. Many countries are removing stringent restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of infection. But, an official of the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised a new concern related to the Omicron sub-strain.

“The virus is evolving and Omicron has many sub-lineages that we are tracking,” Maria Van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 technical chief at the WHO, told a briefing on Thursday. We have BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 and BA.3. It is actually quite unbelievable how Omicron, the latest variant of the concern has surpassed Delta across the globe.” “Most of the sequences are sub-lineage BA.1. We are also seeing an increase in the proportion of sequences from BA.2,” he said.

‘BA.2 is more transmissible’
Expressing concern about one sub-lineage, the WHO official said that “BA.2 is more transmissible” than the others. WHO has shared the video of this briefing. In the tweet accompanying the video, the WHO said that around 75,000 people died of Covid-19 last week. According to the WHO, BA.2 is now responsible for one in five new omicron cases recorded worldwide.

Kerkhove said, “Finally, the WHO official said that Omicron is not mild but less severe than Delta. “We’re still seeing significant numbers of Omicron patients hospitalizing. We’re seeing a huge number of deaths. It’s not the common cold, it’s not influenza. We just have to be really careful.”

A new wave of infections is heading east of Europe
At a briefing on Tuesday, the WHO said a new wave of infections from the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is moving east of Europe. WHO urged officials to improve vaccination and other measures. In the past two weeks, cases of COVID-19 have more than doubled in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine, WHO regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement.
