Notre-Dame burns: Jean-Jacques Annaud rings the bell of the disaster

In a new trailer the director of Stalingrad delivers the tone of his film: tragic and epic.

Parisians panicked by a cloud of black coming from the Seine. Firefighters driven by their mission, to save the cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. They know that this sacred church has seen the most glorious and also the most cruel hours in the history of France since the Middle Ages. We hear the Bumblebee ringing that Quasimodo, in Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, defends like his life…

After the first images delivered sparingly in a short teaser, Jean-Jacques Annaud in a new trailer for Notre Dame is burning decides to make our hearts capsize. On April 15, 2019, France stopped breathing and the director of rose name and of Stalingrad, this history-loving filmmaker, intends to show that he wants to revive what could have been the most terrible of disasters, if the firefighters, with courage and abnegation, had not tried everything to contain the fire.

The Parisians are short to witness the drama

The moments of the film shown in this reworked teaser undoubtedly reveal the scenario of the documentary film, as it mixes some archive footage and scenes imagined by the filmmaker. In a few seconds, everything is there: the dedication and intelligence of the firefighters, who must ignore the poor Parisian traffic and take care not to hurt the people of Paris, sad and dumbfounded, who run to witness the drama towards the City Island.

To achieve this tragic fresco Annaud gave himself the means of his ambition. After having obtained the exceptional authorization to shoot a few scenes on the forecourt during the restoration work, the filmmaker began by shooting Notre Dame is burning in the cathedrals of Sens, Amiens and Bourges, as well as the famous basilica of Saint-Denis. The fire scenes were recreated in the studios of the Cité du Cinéma in Saint-Denis. A sequence was also boxed at the Versailles-Château-Rive-Gauche station.

In a few seconds of winding, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s bet now seems to have been won. Notre Dame is burning evokes, with a little imagination, the fire-spitting gargoyles of the Hugolian novel. The director had promised to make work both epic and tragic. We remember, to our colleagues at RTL, he confessed barely a year ago: “I look at Notre-Dame with emotion, it’s my star. He’s the star of the movie. It’s the story of a star who is dying and rescuers are struggling to stop the bleeding.»

Notre Dame is burning by Jean-Jacques Annaud, released in theaters on March 16, 2022, Samuel Labarthe, Jean-Paul Bordes, Mikael Chirinian, Jérémie Laheurte, Chloé Jouannet and Pierre Lottin…
