People who do a quick self-test for Covid-19 at home need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions correctly and fully to get high-accuracy screening results.

Currently, rapid test for Covid-19 antigen (quick test) has been widely deployed in Ho Chi Minh City and some other localities such as Long An, Binh Duong, Dong Nai… For each citizen to do it properly. For this type of test, pharmacist Tran Pham Truc Mai, Pharmacity Pharmacy, shares things to keep in mind when performing a Covid-19 antigen test at home.

Suggested groups to test quickly at home

Anyone who is showing symptoms of infection such as cough, fever, loss of taste, smell … or is worried that they have the disease can self-test at home, regardless of injection status. What is their strain.

Those who have not been vaccinated and have no symptoms of Covid-19 disease, but have an epidemiological history of close contact with suspected cases or F0 patients, if they suspect that they are highly likely to be in the first stage of the disease. Exposure is particularly important and should be considered for rapid home testing.

Notes before, during and after the quick test

Before self-testing, the operator should carefully read the instructions on the product packaging. If necessary, refer to specific instructions from a pharmacist or other professional. From there, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions correctly and fully to get high-accuracy screening test results. It is equally important to be comfortable and calm for yourself or for the person being tested when performing this test.

Before you start, make sure your hands and tray are disinfected. The person being tested sat upright, tilted his head, relaxed his body and started taking samples according to the instructions.

When using the oropharyngeal swab, pay attention to open the bag and hold the tip of the stick, do not touch the tip of the swab. Insert the swab into one side of the nose until it touches the nasal wall, then stop and rotate it about 5 times for a few seconds and then slowly pull out the swab. When performing this test for children or the elderly, it is necessary to pay attention to slowly and control the force when inserting a cotton swab into the nose in order to avoid forcing the hand and affecting the nasal mucosa.

Immediately then, dip the tip of the swab into the opened test tube of the solution and rotate the tip 10 times so that enough sample can be extracted for the test. Note, when removing a cotton swab from the test tube, it is necessary to squeeze the wall of the test tube with your hand (where the swab is) to remove all the solution from the swab.

At this point, we need to attach the filter cap to the test tube and drop 3 drops of sample extract into the pre-opened test tray and wait for the results to be read after 15 minutes (But not more than 20 minutes). The color of the lines on the test tray will gradually change. However, the results after the time period specified in the instructions are the final recorded results.

Note, in the case of sampling for relatives, the sampler needs to wear a mask throughout the process and the person being sampled also needs to wear a mask to reveal only the nose when starting to be sampled. The person taking the sample should disinfect his hands before taking the sample, after completing the sample collection. In particular, the test kit should be treated as medical waste, which should be sorted and put all in a separate sealed bag when handling. Do not reuse the test device or any other test kit components.

Handling situations after quick test

For the test that gives negative results, we still should not be subjective but still maintain and fully comply with the 5K measures guided by the Ministry of Health. To ensure the safety of yourself and those around you, if you are in a high-risk group, you can take a second test after 3-5 days and a third time 7-10 days after the first time.

In the event of a positive result, immediate contact and regular contact with the nearest local health unit should be obtained for specific instructions regarding confirmatory testing (PCR). At the same time, immediately implement self-isolation and treatment. All persons with a history of close contact should be informed.

If the test tray does not show any lines or the results are blurry / unclear, to be sure, we can use the new test kit to get more accurate results.

At Pharmacity, when buying wholesale/retail rapid test kits at pharmacies, customers are carefully instructed on how to use the test kits as well as advised on how to handle the product after use. In addition, Pharmacity pharmacists also provide phone numbers for medical support hotlines in each locality, and guide people on measures to take care of and protect their health and keep themselves safe. during the pandemic.
