Netflix orders sequel to The Gray Man, its bland spy thriller

The platform is developing a sequel to the adventures of the hitman, played by Ryan Gosling, and is considering a derivative film.

Interviewed by Le Figarothe Russo brothers opened wide the door to the transformation of The Gray ManNetflix’s $200 million spy thriller starring Ryan Gosling. “A sequel is definitely a possibility”replied the filmmakers, delighted to find the military universe that Joe and Anthony Russo had already explored in the already too smooth Cherry (AppleTV+) and Tyler Rake (Netflix).

“The Gray Man is taken from a literary saga: its author Mark Greaney has signed several volumes. We love the character and watching him try to regain his freedom is a thrilling sight but that’s up to the audience to decide.“, specified the duo, long pillar of the MCU of Marvel with the films Avengers and Captain America.

They will not have had long to wait for their purchase order. Less than a week after posting The Gray Man, Netflix announces that it has developed a sequel, where Ryan Gosling will reprise his role as the remorseless and elusive assassin Sierra Six, and a spin-off film. However, the platform did not specify which character this second project would focus on.

The high-flying spy, played by Ana de Armas, and the CIA technocrat played by Regé-Jean Page remained alive after the initial adventure. The sadistic antagonist, camped by Chris Evans, was put out of harm’s way.

Critical disavowal

Disavowed by critics who blame it for a mechanical accumulation of destruction and tasteless stunts, the great spectacle of the Russo brothers was the most viewed title in 92 countries. The Gray Man generated, according to Netflix, 88.55 million hours of viewing in the first days of its operation. The platform’s best score since The Adam Projectnice family action comedy worn by Ryan Reynolds.

In an entertainment industry in turmoil, having a franchise is a priority for both traditional studios and streaming platforms. As for feature films, Netflix has ordered sequels to Tyler Rake and his heist comedy Red Notice with Gal Gadot.
