If someone told you they would pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for 6 years, would you accept the challenge?
In 2016, Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas challenged her 12-year-old son Sivert to not use social media until he was 18. If he completes the challenge, he will receive 1,800 USD (41 million VND).

On February 19, 2022, on his 18th birthday, Sivert received his award.
Lorna said she got the idea when she heard about a similar challenge on the radio – a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she was 16 if she wasn’t on social media. Lorna decided to increase the prize to 1,800 USD and extend the term for 2 years with her son.
Sivert said he doesn’t use social media much, so giving it up is not too difficult, for 6 years he did not think too much about it. The only social network Sivert used before the deal with his mother was Snapchat, which he deleted shortly after trying it out for a day.
“There are times when I feel like I’m going to break the law, when I’ve passed I feel proud,” Sivert said.
Sivert shares that his friends are the ones who keep him up to date with the latest news or trends, but he also tries to avoid being as “drama looking” as possible.
Lorna said she’s never had to test any surreptitiously downloaded apps because Sivert takes the challenge very seriously as an attempt to prove herself. Since not using the social network Sivert has more time to focus on scores and sports activities.
Sivert is still wondering what to spend the money on. When he was 12 years old, the boy joked that he was going to buy a house. But now as an 18-year-old, Sivert says he might be shopping for some furniture for his dorm room at Northwestern St. Paul, where he will be enrolling in the fall.
Sivert said that he will start using Instagram after a long “isolation” from the social network and it will probably take a while to get used to.
Lorna says it’s the most useful money she’s ever spent. She said the purpose of this is not against the social network, simply a way to educate children to use it in a healthy way.
Sivert is the youngest of four children, and his three older sisters all used social media in their teens. Lorna said there was a time when she felt that her daughters were “addicted” to social networks excessively, which had a lot of psychological effects and even led to depression. Lorna banned one of her daughters from using her phone when she was 16 years old, and she later thanked her mother a lot because it really improved her mood significantly.
After Sivert’s success, Lorna shared the challenge on Facebook and got a lot of response from other parents.
