Minister of Health: ‘The medical industry undergoes strong transformation’


Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long admits that the medical industry in 2020 will face many difficulties due to Covid-19, but has actively transformed and achieved many achievements.

“The health sector has achieved many important achievements, contributing to the successful realization of the dual goal of preventing and combating the Covid-19 epidemic and developing socio-economic development,” said Minister Long at National Health Conference, January 6 morning.

The health sector has met two main targets set by the National Assembly and the Government in the Socio-Economic Development Plan 2020: 28 hospital beds per 10,000 people and 90.85% of the population participating in health insurance. Vietnam also maintained 14 consecutive years of achieving replacement fertility, controlling imbalance in sex ratio at birth. Average life expectancy is 73.7 years, an increase of 0.1 years compared to 2019.

The Vietnam Health Program has been approved by the Prime Minister, initially effectively implemented. According to the results of the Nutrition Census in 2020, the stature of the population is improved, the average height of the male youth is 168.1 cm (an increase of 3.7 cm compared to 2009); 156.2 cm female (an increase of 2.6 cm compared to 2009).

Quality of medical examination and treatment services, and people’s satisfaction with medical services continued to improve. The project of remote examination and treatment has been issued, in 45 days, 1,000 remote clinics have been connected, so far more than 1,500 medical facilities nationwide.

According to Minister Long, 2020 is also a year of strong administrative reform for the medical sector. “Vietnam is a bright spot for the successful prevention of Covid-19,” said the Minister of Health.

Vietnam is one of the first four countries to sequence nCoV gene, is one of five countries that can produce antibody diagnostic bio-products and successfully produce ventilators to meet treatment needs. Vietnam is also one of the few countries in ASEAN to test Covid-19 vaccine in humans.

Regarding human resources, the Minister of Health said that in the upcoming revised Law on Examination and Treatment, the health sector exams to issue medical practice certificates, choosing this as the first priority breakthrough.

The two universities of Medicine in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy are tasked with improving the quality of training, attracting foreign students, not just Laos and Cambodia.

The Ministry of Health recommends that the Government increase investment in health, focusing on preventive medicine and grassroots healthcare; increasing social mobilization with appropriate forms such as hiring all information technology services and infrastructure to save manpower, spending time on professional activities instead of administrative activities.
