MAINTENANCE – At 65, Marco Morricone is the eldest of Ennio’s four children. Always working alongside the composer, he faithfully supervised the main stages of Giuseppe Tornatore’s film, Ennio.

LE FIGARO. – What was the origin of this documentary on your father?

Marco MORRICONE. – The producers Gianni Russo and Gabriele Costa came to my house to offer my father to orchestrate a documentary about his life. My father thought for a moment, then got up to phone. I learned later that in fact he had telephoned Giuseppe Tornatore, the director of Cinema Paradiso, to find out if he would accept the job. Tornator accepted. Filming began on December 29, 2014. It lasted five and a half years, because it was not easy to bring everyone together…

What do you think of the result?

When I saw the first cut, which was six hours long, I walked out in tears and went to kiss Tornatore. From his beginnings on the trumpet, following in his father’s footsteps, to the Oscar, passing through his years at the conservatory, I find that the film perfectly reflects Ennio Morricone’s journey. The fact of composing film music was for him a suffering and a torment…
