Large French companies are expected to pay € 52 billion in dividends in 2021

It’s the end of the diet for shareholders. Large French companies listed on the SBF120 index are expected to pay 52 billion euros in dividends this year, according to IHS Markit, the majority of which will be disbursed in the coming weeks. That is, a rebound of 42% in one year, all the more impressive given that the dividends paid this year to shareholders are for the 2020 results, a year marked by a particularly brutal crisis which saw CAC 40 profits fall by half.

But this crisis was not managed like the others by French companies. They were particularly responsive and cut drastically – sometimes reluctantly – in payments to shareholders, from the first announcements of containment. Dividends fell 45% in 2020 to $ 36 billion. During previous economic and financial crises, dividends were among the last items of expenditure to be used.
