Jean Dujardin: “It’s very fun to do, the Sarkozy”

INTERVIEW – In Presidents, the new film by Anne Fontaine, the actor embodies the former head of state. An exercise in style.

Jean Dujardin is currently filming November , by Cédric Jimenez, story of the hunt that followed the attacks of November 13. Not a funny movie at all. Before meeting him in Cannes for OSS 117. Red alert in black Africa , presented at the end of the festival (in theaters on August 4), the actor once again demonstrates his comic genius in real-false Nicolas Sarkozy in Presidents, by Anne Fontaine.

LE FIGARO. – According to Anne Fontaine, your Nicolas is a “evocation” by Nicolas Sarkozy …

Jean Dujardin. – I have another word other than evocation: diversion. This is what I do on the OSS 117. I divert Sean Connery in the first, Paul Newman in the second. There it is the same thing. I start from a real character. I take his verticality and his small voice. I amuse myself by picking up his pockets. It is neither him nor me but a kind of hybrid. The hybrid works quite well.

Have you met him?

Yes. It’s a lot of fun doing the Sarkozy. I think everyone has their Sarkozy in mind.
