Jared Leto stars as Joker for the second time in Justice League final cut

For the “director’s cut” of his film broadcast on March 18 on HBO Max, Zack Snyder proposed to the actor to Suicide Squad to reprise his role as the super villain in additional scenes. A teaser and some photos bear witness to this transformation in the form of a second chance.

To miss the chance to enter the legend by playing the Joker, this is the sad misadventure which occurred to Jared Leto. Despite his best efforts, the actor of Dallas Buyers Club was not unforgettable in the Suicide Squad by David Ayer released in 2016. It was without counting Zack Snyder …

Grand prince, the director of 300 and Man of steel, who is currently working on a new director’s cut for his film Justice League aired on March 18 on HBO Max, has hired Jared Leto. In what is now nicknamed the “Snydercut”, he offered to reprise his role as Joker in a handful of never-before-seen sequences where Batman’s worst enemy is arguing with the Dark Knight.

The teaser unveiled on the networks attests to this perfectly. The Dark Knight embodied in Justice League by Ben Affleck will indeed meet the Joker who appears in the guise of Jared Leto …

Behind this strange reunion hides a singular story with drawers. We remember that in 2017, Zack Snyder had not planned to stage the “Clown Prince of Crime” in Justice League.

Between a family tragedy that occurred during the filming of the film (the suicide of his 20-year-old daughter Autumn) and a permanent clash with Warner Bros., the director wisely chooses to get away from the sets to take care of his family. Justice League was completed by filmmaker Joss Whedon.

Today, Zack Snyder and Jared Leto look a bit like two burn victims sacrificed on the altar of the Hollywood entertainment industry. It’s no wonder, then, that the American filmmaker chose to give a second chance to the one actor who couldn’t shine in the eyes of fans thanks to his truncated performance in Suicide Squad. A redemption for Leto …

In Vanity Fair, Zack Snyder has revealed how he brought the Joker into the final cut of his Justice League : “The Joker is really the only thing I thought about in retrospect. I always intended to bring Joker to this world. The scene I’m thinking of, set in the “nightmare sequence” of Justice League, allows me to portray the Joker in a cool situation. He talks directly to Batman … about Batman. He analyzes it. He tells her who is behind the mask. He explains to her who he is, and what he is. I felt that fans of the DC comics universe deserved this showdown scene …

To support his remarks, Zack Snyder posted two pictures on his Twitter account, included on Vanity Fair, where he shows the new face of the Joker in the guise of Jared Leto … Several other tasers released since have made it possible to play the game of the seven differences, by comparing the Joker version Snyder, against that of Suicide Squad.

What we immediately notice on the two unpublished black and white photos posted on Zack Snyder’s Twitter account, is that the Joker second version of Jared Leto wears long hair. While in the David Ayer version, he wore a punk look, short neon green hair, totally destroyed, inspired by the comics of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland The Killing Joke, released in 1988.

Overloaded, “too much”, the exuberant appearance of the Joker of Suicide Squad will not have convinced many people, nor even the director who removed a significant number of scenes where the character appeared. © Warner Bros.

In David Ayer’s film, the character’s forehead featured the “damaged” tattoo as well as a series of onomatopoeias “Ha ha ha ha ha!” wrapping around his arms or around his body. His leaden teeth and bulging eyes completed the portrait of Harley Quinn’s angry and annoying boyfriend. Overloaded, “too much”, the appearance of the Joker will not have convinced many people, nor even the director who removed a large number of scenes where he appeared.

In the “director’s cut” of Justice League, it seems that the Joker played by Leto is returning to a more conventional form of representation. Her extravagant makeup is gone, along with her hysterical smile and tattoos. The new version of the character also features a more sober wardrobe, a sort of white coat, a surgical mask and a pair of gloves. He is above all more melancholy …

Classic Joker imagery is therefore back, seen and adapted in comics and movies alike. From Jack Nicholson to Joaquin Phoenix via Heath Ledger, or César Romero who played him in the 60s TV series, the Joker remains the most terrifying supervillain of all comic-books.

Created in 1940 in the first issue of the review Batman, it has long been ranked number 1 “Among the greatest villains of all time“. As another villain from the Batman universe puts it: “When supervillains want to scare each other, they tell each other Joker stories.”

Let us wish this time that Jared Leto can give the full measure of his talent to embody a fascinating, terrifying Joker, by combining the playing power of Nicholson with the seductive perversity of Heath Ledge with the monstrous fragility of Joaquin Phoenix … while revisiting , again, the character. Will he find new jokes … to die for laughing?
