Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams’ birthday today, know the big things related to her

connection with India

Sunita Williams was born on 19 September 1965 in the city of Ohio, her father is from Gujarat, India, while her mother is from Slovenia. Therefore Sunita’s connection with India is deep.

Academic Qualification

Sunita Williams completed her studies from Needham High School in Massachusetts in 1983, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy and holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Management. He was inducted into the US Navy in 1987. After a temporary assignment of six months, he was appointed as the Basic Diving Officer. Sunita Williams began training for space travel in 1998.

Bhagavad Gita was taken on a space journey

Sunita Williams shared an interesting anecdote related to her space travel in her interview. She had told in her interview that she had taken Bhagavad Gita, Lord Ganesha’s idol and samosa along with her in her journey.

Sunita Williams also has a special world record, she has set the record for the most walks done by a woman in space. He has done spacewalks seven times. He also holds the record for the longest spacewalk which was about 50 hours 40 minutes. She has spent about 322 days in space in her two shuttle missions.


Defense Superior Service Medal to Sunita Williams twice, Navy Commendation twice Medal, Legion of Merit and Marine Crop Achievement Medal once. Apart from this, he has been given many types of medals and honors.
