India rebukes Pakistan in UN, says- this is a platform for serious discussion, not for petty allegations

United Nations: India criticized Pakistan for making irrelevant and irresponsible remarks at the United Nations, saying that the General Assembly is a forum for serious discussion rather than petty allegations. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador TS Tirumurthy said this in an address on Monday on the issue of ‘equal representation and increase in the number of members of the Security Council’.

Pakistani envoy to the UN, Munir Akram, in his address, made reference to the Line of Control opposing India’s membership of the UN Security Council. The Indian envoy said, “I do not want to waste the time of this gathering by replying to irrelevant and irresponsible remarks made by the Pakistani representative.” Whenever India is mentioned, it goes ‘mad’. The Indian representative said this in the context of Pakistan’s automatic response or earlier reactions. Tirumurthy said, “This is a forum for serious discussion, not for petty allegations.”

At present there are five permanent and 10 temporary member nations in the UN Security Council. Temporary members are elected by the Sanhara General Assembly for a period of two years. The five permanent members are Russia, Britain, China, France and the United States and these countries have the right to veto any proposal. To reflect contemporary global realities, the demand for increasing the number of permanent members is increasing.

India, Brazil, South Africa, Germany and Japan are strong contenders for permanent membership of the UN Security Council. The primary responsibility of the Security Council is to maintain international peace and security.
