India has expressed its displeasure over the breaking of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi by some anti-social elements in California, USA. India has demanded a detailed investigation and strict action on the culprits. This is the second such incident in the last one month.
Foreign Ministry expressed opposition
The Ministry of External Affairs said that on 28 January, unknown elements broke this idol of Bapu. The Ministry said, “The Government of India protests against the insult of our Father who gives the message of peace and justice all over the world.” The face of the idol is badly fragmented and the statue was also broken from its lower part and separated. An idol of the park was found in this condition. The ministry said that the Indian embassy in Washington has taken up the matter with the US State Department and seriously investigated the case and demanded appropriate action against those responsible for the incident. The US State Department said that the incident of damage to the statue was unacceptable and hoped that the culprits would be arrested as soon as possible and strict action would be taken against them. The Foreign Ministry said that the mayor of Davis city expressed deep regret over the incident and informed that they had started an investigation.
Government of India gave the statue
A bronze statue of Bapu, 6 feet high and weighing around 300 kg, is installed in the city of Davis, Northern California. The Government of India gave this idol as a gift in the year 2016. Local Indian community organizations have also condemned the incident of sabotage.
