At first glance, nothing distinguishes the vast construction site in the Gerland district, in the heart of Lyon. The foundations of several apartment buildings are being dug while the commercial buildings are already very advanced. However, not long ago, these 4.5 hectares surrounded by dwellings were unfit for construction. The site was an installation classified for the protection of the environment (ICPE), that is to say a polluted area.

“The pollution of the site was linked to the activity of the chemical company of Gerland, producer of tar and derivatives. Then it was the household appliance manufacturer Fagor-Brandt who settled here for many years ”, explains Bruno Farber, construction helmet screwed onto the head and suit jacket. Because Bruno Farber is not a construction worker. He is a financier at the head of the Ginkgo investment fund, specializing in the decontamination of old industrial brownfields in urban areas.
