Syniverse, a company that routes hundreds of billions of text messages a year to hundreds of mobile carriers globally, says a hacker has been gaining unauthorized access to their database for five years.
This information has been disclosed by Syniverse to government regulators. However, neither Syniverse nor the telecom carriers have yet said whether the hacker was able to access customers’ text messages.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week, Syniverse said: “In May 2021, Syniverse discovered unauthorized access to its information technology systems by an unidentified person or entity. Immediately, the company carried out an internal investigation, notified law enforcement agencies, initiated remedial actions and enlisted the services of legal advice and response experts. another incident”.

According to Syniverse, the investigation revealed that the unauthorized access began in May 2016 and that the individual or organization obtained unauthorized access to the database in its network. Accordingly, the data of about 235 customers of the company was illegally accessed by hackers.
However, Syniverse declined to answer specific questions about whether the text messages were leaked and what impact the attack would have on major US and global carriers.
“Due to the confidential nature of our relationship with our customers and an ongoing investigation, we will not be making further public statements regarding this matter,” Syniverse said.
According to Syniverse, its internet messaging service processes more than 740 billion messages per year for more than 300 mobile operators worldwide. While Syniverse may not be a household name to most mobile phone users, the company plays an important role in ensuring that text messages get to their destination.
In connection with this incident, Syniverse has notified all affected customers of this unauthorized access and believes that no further action is needed. Syniverse has also taken measures to enhance protection for systems and customers. The company is confident that everything remains under control.
While Syniverse believes it has fully identified and fixed the vulnerabilities that led to the problems described above, there is no guarantee that the company will not experience a future cyberattack resulting in to such consequences.

According to information from Vice Magazine, citing an employee of a phone company, a hacker may have gained access to the content of the SMS messages.
