How to prevent young children in cold season

Children need to be kept warm, bathed properly, get enough sleep, should not stay long in a closed room and maintain a adequate nutrition regime.

The weather in the North is very cold, many children are hospitalized due to asthma, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, respiratory failure. Some cases of allergic rhinitis, sore throat, fever, cough, runny nose, rhinitis … Many serious children due to pneumonia, bronchitis many times.

Doctor Nguyen Tien Dung, former head of the Department of Pediatrics, Bach Mai Hospital, said that in the cold season, the virus lives a long time in the environment, human resistance is also reduced so it is easy to get sick.

“Children get sick not only due to cold weather”, Dr. Phi Xuan Thi, Paediatrics Department, Quang Ninh Obstetrics Hospital explained. Some children who stay indoors a lot are also susceptible to bacteria and viruses because they can spread better in cool, humid environments. Frequently changed eating and sleeping habits while traveling in the winter can lead to a more vulnerable and ineffective child’s immune system in fighting infections.

“Therefore, family and relatives need to know how to take care of the baby properly to keep the baby healthy”, the doctor emphasized.

First, children need to be kept warm, especially the feet, chest, neck, head, away from the wind and out at night. Do not incubate the baby too carefully, sweat will seep back into the body, causing the baby to be cold, leading to pneumonia. Regularly check if your baby is sweating or not to promptly dry or change the baby shirt. With young children, need to check and change diapers often to prevent the baby’s body from getting cold because diapers are wet for too long.

Maintain room temperature 25-28 degrees C, airy but avoid drafts. It is possible to use air conditioners, heaters, and heaters, but absolutely do not use coal stoves because CO2 can cause poisoning and suffocation for children and people around them.

Children need to be properly cleaned and bathed. For babies born up to one week old, daily bathing is essential because their body still has a lot of clinging substances. If the child is not bathed, he or she can easily plug the pores, causing infection. When bathing your baby, pay attention to close the door of the room, avoid placing the bath tub in a windy place. If using an air conditioner or fan heater, it should be turned on about 15 minutes before for the room temperature to warm up. The water temperature for a child’s bath is the same as the body temperature from 36-37 degrees Celsius.

For children over 10 days old and on, it is not necessary to bathe every day. It can be used every two to three days. Bath time for the baby does not exceed 10 minutes.

“An important rule when bathing children when it is cold is to bathe from bottom to top. Wash your hair quickly after bathing to avoid getting cold when it is wet,” the doctor emphasized.

Parents can take a bath first and then the baby to warm the bathroom air. You can also add a little tea tree oil to the water to make the bath warm.

Children should not stay long in a closed room, more susceptible to disease. Children need to be active outdoors to increase their adaptability to the weather, increase resistance, and prevent many infectious diseases.

For children under 5 years old, need to go outside to sunbathe daily in the morning to absorb vitamin D, to prevent rickets. Limit children to crowded places, avoid contact with sick people, stay away from sources of pollution such as dust, cigarette smoke …

The doctor notes that when young children sleep, they often kick off blankets, open legs, open stomach … causing the baby to get cold in the stomach leading to cough, pneumonia, stomach pain or digestive disorders … Children going to bed should wear jumpsuits or blankets and socks to prevent cold.

For a newborn, the head is the place to generate about 40% of the body temperature while releasing up to 85% of the body temperature. Therefore, wearing a hat and using a tapering bandage is essential for newborn babies, especially premature babies. Particularly healthy babies are several months old, wearing a hat when sleeping is not necessary, but will cause the baby’s head temperature to rise, adversely affecting brain activity.

Develop a menu with foods rich in calcium and vitamins. Children’s meals must be guaranteed with enough nutrients. Add more orange juice, fruit, yogurt; fortify foods containing zinc and selenium to improve resistance, stimulate appetite, increase nutrient absorption. For babies, it is recommended to breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months.

Keep the environment clean, create a habit of having clean hands and feet with soap and get your child fully vaccinated to limit seasonal diseases.
