How the choice of specialties in high school influences Parcoursup

This year 2021 sees the culmination of the reform of the baccalaureate, which gives pride of place to specialized teaching (1). A reality to which higher education courses have had to adapt, so far often used to classifying their candidates according to the course followed. L, ES and S streams that are now a thing of the past.

“Colleagues rely on the expectations, the prerequisites formulated for each license, indicates François Germinet, the president of CY-Cergy-Paris-Université. In letters, for example, they especially put at the top of the pile the candidates who chose humanist specialties for the bac, where previously the candidates of the scientific series, deemed to be the best, often passed in front. “

No eco prep without math

“This is also true in many literary preparations”, says Gwenaël Surel, deputy secretary general of SNPDEN, a union of school leaders. Its high school, in Nantes, offers a general economic and commercial preparatory class. There, the fact of having or not chosen the economy at the baccalaureate counts quite little. “We favored candidates who had done math in the final year, sometimes as an option” complementary math “but more certainly in specialty”, testifies this principal.

The impact of specialty courses on the Parcoursup process varies from one establishment to another, with the most popular ones being able to afford to select only certain candidate profiles. The unveiling of the results will really make it possible to know whether the players in the higher education sector have broken with their old habits. “Do post-baccalaureate engineering schools, for example, continue to recruit almost exclusively students who have done math and physics?, asks Pierre Mathiot, the “father” of the bac reform. Or will they also make room for those who have chosen the new specialty “digital and computer science”? “

“In our competition, we have planned four blocks of questions, one devoted to math, compulsory, and three others from which to choose: physics-chemistry, life and earth sciences, digital and computer sciences”, answers Vincent Derrien, communications director for two engineering schools, Isen and Yncrea Ouest. “But other establishments will undoubtedly need a transition of several years before fully embracing the logic of the new bac”, considers Pierre Mathiot.

350,000 scores in the Sciences-Po Lille algorithm

The large school he runs, Sciences-Po Lille, for its part received 14,000 application files and mixed 350,000 notes in its algorithm! “We looked in particular at the quarterly averages of first and final year, with a higher coefficient for subjects related to our training (history-geography, French, etc.), as well as for those retained in specialty education, even s ‘it was physics-chemistry or SVT “, he specifies.

Enough to recruit various profiles, as is the case, even more, in BTS and IUT, respectively forced to integrate quotas of professional and technological baccalaureate holders. “For Parcoursup, the IUT systematically provided two separate lists: 50% of places for general baccalaureate, 50% for techno baccalaureate”, says Martial Martin, president of the IUT Directors’ Assembly.
