Google and Tripadvisor suspend reviews in some countries related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
On Thursday (March 3), Google stopped adding reviews to its Online Maps service in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine to avoid information used for skirmishes. Meanwhile, travel platform Tripadvisor has blocked reviews of restaurants, hotels or other locations if the commentary focuses on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“Due to the recent increase in contributed content on Google Maps related to the war in Ukraine, we have put in place additional safeguards to track and prevent content that violates our policies. me for Maps,” a Google spokesman told AFP.
Twitter account @YourAnonNews, who claims to be the voice of hacker group Anonymous, shared on Twitter: “Go to Google Maps. Go to Russia. Find a restaurant or business and write a review. When you write a review price, please explain what is happening in Ukraine”.
Therefore, safeguards including temporarily blocking new reviews, photos or videos from being added to Maps for places in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine are urgently needed.
“We have created topics in our forums for people living in Ukraine to share information about what is happening in this country in real time,” said Steve Kaufer, CEO of Tripadvisor.
“We will be using our existing Ukrainian forums to allow users to share information through our platform in the coming days,” he said.
