According to the rankings of Bloomberg and Forbes, the Microsoft founder is still ranked 5th on the list of the richest people on the planet despite donating 6 billion USD worth of shares to charity in the past week.
Accordingly, filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission show that the billionaire donated $5.2 billion worth of Canadian National Railways stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Next, the charity fund run by him and his ex-wife also received a stake in Deere & Co, equivalent to $995 million.
More than 3 million shares have been transferred from Gates’ portfolio, Cascade Investment LLC, to this nonprofit fund.
According to Bloomberg, Gates owns a fortune of about $ 112 billion, behind other billionaires such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault and Indian tycoon Gautam Adani.
The Microsoft co-founder has pledged to give away $20 billion this month and plans to donate “most of his fortune.”
“I will give it all away and get off the list of the richest people in the world,” Bill Gates said in a tweet last week.
In early July 2022, the Bill & Melinda Charitable Foundation announced it would increase its annual charitable giving to $9 billion between now and 2026.
The foundation’s official website also states that commitments and donations to the charity have reached about $70 billion, including an annual donation of $3.1 billion from billionaire Warren Buffett.
According to Gates, philanthropy is an obligation “to give back resources to society that reduce suffering and improve the lives of others.”. He hopes other people living “rich and privileged lives” will follow suit.
The Gates couple currently run the same charity. However, this organization said that within 1 year Melinda French Gates can completely resign as co-chair if she and her ex-husband cannot work together.
